Crossroads church name change

A Statement from Our Elders

Why did we decide to change our name?

The elders recently proposed to the congregation that we change the name of our church from Crossroads Church to Christ Covenant Church. Our church members agreed with the proposal and overwhelmingly voted to change the name.

While there is nothing wrong with the name "Crossroads," we do not think it carried any substantive theological significance or meaning. "Christ Covenant" on the other hand succinctly conveys a little bit more about who we are and what we believe. Jesus is the Christ. He is the Messiah, the Son of David, the king, and Lord over his church. Jesus said, "I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it" (Matt. 16:18). We recognize that our local church belongs to Jesus. He is Lord over our church and he rules our church through his word. Every week when we gather together, we seek to submit to the authority of Christ by hearing his word read and preached.

Throughout biblical history, God has revealed his plan of redemption through various covenants. A covenant forms a relationship between two parties characterized by loyalty, faithfulness, trust, love, and obedience. The church is God's covenant people. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus has purchased every blessing of the new covenant for us. We belong to Christ and in him we have the forgiveness of sins, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the law written on the heart, and an inheritance in the new creation. We also recognize that our relationships with our fellow members in the church are covenantal. We believe a local church is made up of believers who make promises to serve one another, love one another, care for one another, assemble together and work together to protect the truth of the gospel.

"Christ Covenant Church" is a name that suggests our commitment to a robust doctrine of the church rooted in biblical authority. As we transition to a different building in the city of Midvale, we pray that God will continue to bless our church and draw people to himself through the preaching of his word.
